I urge Amazon to cut off its support for the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the secretive organization where corporate lobbyists literally write model laws for right-wing state legislators. Amazon was a "Director Level" sponsor of ALEC's 2011 Annual Meeting.
In the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting, ALEC has received increased attention for its role in drafting so-called "stand your ground" laws in Florida and other states. ALEC also pushes laws that would create giant new tax loopholes, attack workers rights, undermine environmental protections, and make it harder for young people and people of color to vote.
ALEC's extreme positions do not reflect the values of Amazon's customers, their employees, or the communities where they do business. I urge Amazon to do what corporations like Coca-Cola, Kraft, and McDonald's have already done, and publicly sever its ties to ALEC.
